Humpback whales are one of the larger species in the planet. Adult whales range in length from 12–16 meters (39–52 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb). These mammals are acrobats known for breaching and slapping the water with its tail and pectorals.
Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 kilometres (16,000 mi) each year. They migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and to give birth in the winter.
Their diet consists mostly of Krill, shrimp, plankton and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net feeding technique.
The Males produce a complex and magical songs lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time. Its purpose may have a role in mating and communication.
It is popular to watch the whales off the Pacific coasts of Costa Rica between August, september and october coming from the Southern Hemisphere and between December through April coming from the Northern Hemisphere. The ideal home for the amazing mammals is the Marino Ballena Park located in Bahia Ballena, Uvita.
The park has an incredible geology formation, and the whole purpose is to protect important natural marine habitat as crabs, algae, several species of fish, starfish, turtles and a variety of shellfish, Pacific spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins as well as humpback and shark whales. Among the protected habitat are sandy and rocky beaches, estuaries, mangroves, cliffs, rocky reefs, coral reefs, and “El Tombolo” of Playa Uvita.
“The tombolo” its a natural barrier reef created by the forces of two rivers on either side of the reef, which due to the currents has formed and maintained the shape of a whale’s tail.
